These two photos were taken in the Old Port during "Blizzard Nemo" back in February. Portland received a record-setting (for a single storm) total of 31.9 inches of snow. Luckily my work was closed due to the storm so I was able to capture some of the exciting event in the photos below and many more (of lesser quality) that I posted over at Portland Daily Photo.
]]>Here is a recent photographic addition to the Nature gallery on this site. Taken earlier this evening on the Western Promenade, this yellow daffodil and the setting sun caught my eye. I don't take photos of flowers very often, but I am tempted to capture their beauty every spring.

Just a quick post to say that two of my photos (the top two) on the cover of the Portland Downtown District's 2013-2014 Map & Directory. Available at retailers and restaurants throughout the city.
]]>It is very subtle in this image, but it is a four second exposure, which gave the water a slightly smoother look than usual. This long-exposure (although not very long) before the sun set was made possible by using a neutral density filter. A neutral density filter, depending on its strength, acts kind of like a pair of dark sunglasses and blocks light from entering the camera. The particular filter than I purchased recently, my first foray into neutral density filters, is this Hoya ND400 9-stop filter. Stay tuned for more long-exposure photographs in the future as I learn how to use this new piece of equipment. I'm looking forward to experimenting with more shots around the waterfront and some shots that show the motion of the clouds.

Today I uploaded a few photographs taken earlier this morning from the Maine State Pier. The State Pier was built in 1924 and is owned by the City of Portland. It's a pretty busy spot in the summer due to being the home of the Casco Bay Lines ferry service and being in the heart of the Old Port. It's a lot quieter in the winter, which allows for some unique photo opportunities.
This first photo is of a Ferry cutting through the fog on it's way back to the city:
And this photo is from the very end of the State Pier, looking towards South Portland:
