Start of Summer

May 28, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend! You can see some of my photos from the Portland Memorial Day Parade here on my daily photo blog. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer in this part of the world, a time when Portland really comes back to life. It is fitting then that this photo from Sunday evening is the first photo from 2013 that I've added to my "Summer gallery" on this site. The color and detail in this photo is especially evident when viewed large, and is primarily due to my new camera body (I've upgraded from a Nikon D90 to a full-frame Nikon D600). I look forward to being able to capture the beauty of Portland even more precisely going forward, and don't be surprised if you see me post some "updated versions" of a few of my favorite scenes.

Towards the Old Port

My most recently uploaded photo was taken back in February 2012. This is a view towards Portland's Old Port from across the harbor in South Portland. I enjoy using my 70-300mm telephoto lens for these types of shots that you can't really see with the naked eye. Being "zoomed in" this close can provide a whole new perspective of a scene.

Suddenly, Last Winter

The weather has been springlike and beautiful lately, so of course I am just getting around to uploading more photos from the most recent winter.

These two photos were taken in the Old Port during "Blizzard Nemo" back in February. Portland received a record-setting (for a single storm) total of 31.9 inches of snow. Luckily my work was closed due to the storm so I was able to capture some of the exciting event in the photos below and many more (of lesser quality) that I posted over at Portland Daily Photo

Here is a recent photographic addition to the Nature gallery on this site. Taken earlier this evening on the Western Promenade, this yellow daffodil and the setting sun caught my eye. I don't take photos of flowers very often, but I am tempted to capture their beauty every spring.

Spring Skyline from Mill Creek

The two photos uploaded today were taken this morning from the Mill Creek area of South Portland. For the second photo, I was able to leave the shutter open long enough to capture some movement in the water, giving it a sort of smooth look. I have found however that it is tricky to get the most accurate colors with long exposures such as this. I look forward to trying this sort of shot again perhaps during a dramatic sunset or sunrise.
